Network / Connection issues with Modern Warfare 3?


For those of you having problems with your network connection with Modern Warfare 3 or can’t connect to their servers, there are some steps here that you could try:

  1. Check to see if the Call of Duty servers are down here: http://www.callofduty.com/mw3/status If they are down then it is a problem on their end of things, not yours and everyone will be in the same position. All you can do is wait till they are back online. Chances are they will be down for maintenance.
  2. Restart your router and console to refresh everything and start a brand new connection.
  3. Make sure your Routers Firmware is updated, read the instruction manual for your router for a guide of how to do this. A simple firmware update can make a huge difference.
  4. Security of Firewall software on your router could cause network problems, disable this to see if it helps your connection. If you are using a PC make sure you have adequate software firewall protection installed.
  5. If you are still having problems you can try port forwarding which is a little more advanced. This interacts directly with your router to allow connections on the specific ports Modern Warfare 3 uses. You can learn how to forward ports here. The router / firewall ports corresonding to your platform are below:
    Platform TCP PORT UDP PORT
    PC 27014-27050, 3074 27000-27015, 27016-27030
    Playstation 3 80, 443, 5223, 3074 3074, 3478, 3479
    Wii 80, 443, 28910, 29900, 3074 All Ports
    Xbox 360 80, 53, 3074 88, 53, 3074

If you try all the 4 steps above you should be getting a perfect connection, if not then the likely cause of the problem is either on Activision’s servers end or a problem on your ISP’s end. You can contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or Activision directly to get extra help in fixing your network problems.

Update 13/11/2011:

A quote from Activision: “Since Tuesday’s launch, Modern Warfare 3′s multiplayer has been working great. In fact, the amount of players online is even higher than what it was this time last year for Black Ops. Have fun — we hope you continue to enjoy MW3 to the fullest.

However, on Call of Duty Elite, we are having trouble scaling the service to meet demand. We’re aware that many of you are currently experiencing problems with the Call of Duty Elite service. You’re frustrated, we know it, and we know we need to fix it. Our teams have been working non-stop to identify issues and resolve them as quickly as possible. Again, these issues have no impact on the performance of the game. If you have questions about the state of the Call of Duty Elite service, please go to http://www.callofduty.com/elitestatus.

Please note that we are experiencing heavier than normal volume. As a result, there may be a delay in receiving a response. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

So if the problems are on their end of things then theres nothing we can do unfortunatelyexcept wait for them to fix the problem and upgrade their servers to deal with the enormous volume of players.


Extra Tip for PS3 users:

“Try deleting the PS3 browser cache and the browser’s cookies.

Do the following to delete the PS3 browser cache & cookies:

  • In the Playstation XMB select “Network“.
  • Scroll down and select “Internet Browser” and Press X.
  • Press the triangle button.
  • Highlight “Tools” and press Right on the analog stick or diagonal pad.
  • Scroll down and highlight “Delete Cache”.
  • Press X and select Yes.
  • Then highlight “Delete Cookies”.
  • Press X and select Yes.

Extra tip for Xbox-360 users:

“Run the Xbox Network Self Test to see how strong your NAT is currently set to. Turn on your Xbox 360 without a disc inside and go to “My Xbox”, select “System Settings”-> “Network Settings” then choose “Test Xbox Live Connection” and let the test run. Once the test is completed you will be notified if there is an issue with your connection. If you select “More Info” you will be given information about your NAT type and some steps to resolve any issues with your connection.”

Extra tip for PC users:

  • Navigate to the following path on your PC (or where you have the Modern Warfare 3 files located): C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam and delete the file named “ClientRegistry.blob” and restart steam.
  • Ensure you have the “Dedicated server” option enabled in your Modern Warfare 3 settings.
  • Update your routers firmware as stated above already, as this can be a factor that a lot of people overlook but updating it could fix all your problems.

    help me!!!! please i trying fix this problem from the last tuesday and i still trying fix it i don’t know what happens i tried every opcion in all the forums and i still can;t fix this problem when i select play leave ”connecting to services for 1 minute approximately and nothing and after it says error: check http:modernwarfare3.com/ for updates but i yet rode everyone solutions in everyone forrums and nothing my modem is echolifehg520c.
    Please can somebody helpme????????

    Ok, so I’ve been trying to help my buddy set up his PSN connection for some time now so that he can connect and play online; however, I have been unsuccessful. I am a Computer Guy in the Army so I know PLENTY of Networking skills (Security+, Network+, & A+ ). We’ve been trying to use all different type of ports for TCP & UDP and all have been unsuccessful. Been trying to use different IP’s and the Gateway that’s it been saying to use. Can anyone provide me with some help so I can have help my buddy set up in time for some Thanksgiving killing sprees?     Seriously this is pissing me off. I bet callofduty can do something about it
    c’mon after we buy your game what’s this all about…

    I have changed my connectino to LLC, it worked but next time I log in same problem.
    I have turned upnp off it worked again, but the again after several hours trying to play again. SAME PROBLEM.

    I still havent changed the dsl thing do dls2+ but ppl have to understand everybody has different routers and it’s not so easy as for anyone.

    and c’mon this is enough + i have nat type 2
    I need to blame some1 for this cuz that person is really F**** ppl and needs to get his a$$ kicked

    got the this: call of duty mw3 servers are not available at this time. please try again later or visit call of duty page for update… havent played one single online match since i got the game last week, it sucks…! dont know what to do.. wasted 50 euro on nothing i guess. im not the only one getting this, phew :) it really pisses me off!! why is it always some crap happening… i can play mw2 fine online without problems btw.

    i’ve tried some off the things listed above, no luck.. guess i just gonna leave the game to dust down..
    or just be very optimist, that ONE day, one day it will work…

    So,I’ve moved from south England to south east Wales.. i’m on Xbox 360. I can play Halo 4 online and i can play call of duty: Black Ops. BUT… i just cannot get any games on MW3. Which is the one i want to play the most!!
