Black Ops 2 Lag Problems & Network fixes

Lag, latency, a bad connection or just glictching? No matter what you label it, when playing online multiplayer games a fast, clean and efficient connection is the single most important aspect. Let’s get one thing straight, Lag is ALWAYS going to be a reality in online communication or gameplay as the speed your data is sent around the world is limited by physical attributes of our universe! (Things are starting to get deep!)

For majority of users in their usual games, lag is usually never a problem and online gaming is fun and fair but with Black Ops 2 lag seems to be hard wired into the multiplayer experience. It’s easy to identify the game as the problem too if you are playing other online games without any problems.

So how do you know if your connection isn’t up to speed and your playing with lag? The Kill Cam is a great way of showcasing what is actually happening in the game you are playing and unfortunately (due to lag) it doesn’t always match up with what’s happening on your screen! For example, you fire 5 shots from your gun at your opponent but he kills you first and when you watch the Kill Cam back you are shown to only fire 3 shots.

Dan Amrich (Activision Employee) gives his thoughts on the matter: “If you want lag-free gaming, you have to go LAN or split-screen, but if you want to play with people across the country or around the world, you’re going to sometimes see a delay as the data makes it way around the series of tubes. Lag is inherent to online gaming, it’s ultimately entirely random at any given time you sit down to play (nobody controls the Internet, remember?), and no developer or publisher will ever be able to remove it from an online experience.” (source)

Waiting around for an update to fix whatever problems Treyarch may be having could leave us checking our watches far too often so have a look at some possible lag solutions below to help with your internet connection and ultimately your K:D ratio!

Fix 1) Moving your PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 or PC closer to your router if you are using Wi-Fi. This may seem like a simple thing to do but it can make a huge difference to your connection speed. Alternately plugging your PC or Console in via Ethernet cable to your Router will always be faster than any wireless system resulting in better pings.

Fix 2) Change your Black Ops 2 search preferences. To do this, follow the steps below:

First enter Multiplayer and click on ‘Public Match’.Step 1Next click on ‘Find a Game’ and you’ll notice in the bottom right hand corner a button to change your searching preferences.Once pressed you’ll be presented with a screen where you can choose between three different match making preferences in Black Ops 2 as seen below.

The most laggy Black Ops 2 settingThe best match making preference to go for is ‘Best’ which should in theory always put you in the best possible game (assuming there is one to join). It may take a little while longer to find games but at the end of it you should have a much better playing experience.

Fix 3) Ensure your NAT type is set to open. If this isn’t the case then you’ll need to forward the ports that Black Ops 2 uses on your router. (Info on how to do this here)

Fix 4) Make sure your internet connection isn’t being bogged down. By this is mean ensuring that no one else in your home is downloading or uploading content over the internet. Uploading photos or videos online can bring an internet connection to a stand still for all those connected to the same network.

I sure hope some of the fixes above will help you with any lag problems you’ve been experiencing. If you have any other tips about improving your connection speed in Black Ops 2 please share them in the comments below.

More fixes from Activision:

Below is a page from Activision set to help you out if you are experiencing lag problems in Black Ops 2.

If you are experiencing latency (commonly known as “lag”) while playing Call of Duty: Black Ops II online, there are a number of steps that you can take to improve the quality of your connection, all revolving around these two key components of Call of Duty online gaming:

  1. Home Network Quality: Improve the integrity and quality of your network by opening your NAT settings, avoiding use of bandwidth-heavy applications such as video streaming, and playing over a wired Ethernet connection.
  2. Matchmaking: Understand how matchmaking works so that you can use that knowledge to connect to the best games possible

The guide below expands on the steps you can take to improve connection quality in the game.

Home network setup:

  1. Disable any firewall or security features on your router. See your router’s instruction manual for details.
  2. Enable UPnP on your router. This will automatically route the correct data to the correct ports. If this does not resolve the issue, then try oneof the following two alternatives:
    • Set port forwarding on your router to the IP address of your console. This game uses port 3074 UDP (User Datagram Protocol). If there are multiple consoles on your home network, you can also redirect UDP ports 3074, 3075, and 3076 to the console (one port per console).
    • Place your console’s IP address into the DMZ of your router.
  3. Make sure that you are playing the game over a wired Ethernet connection to your console. DO NOT USE A WIFI CONNECTION. This is a very important step, as WIFI has a wide variance in reliability and bandwidth. Online gaming require a consistent level of minimum bandwidth connection to maintain good connection quality. Because modern consoles come with integrated WIFI, it is easy for users to use that connection to play games. Make sure that you configure your console’s settings to use the wired Ethernet network instead of the integrated WIFI network.

If the above steps improve your network connection to the game, you may want to assign your console a static IP address within your home network. This will ensure that the configurations you made do not need to be done again. You can visit PortForward’s Static IP Guide for a detailed guide.

If the above steps do not improve your network connection to the game, run a test by disconnecting your console from your router and reconnecting the console directly to your modem. If the connection quality of the game improves with this test, your router may not be compatible with the specific needs of this game. Check with your router manufacturer and the console manufacturers’ troubleshooting guides for additional information:

PlayStation 3: Connection Issues page
Xbox 360: Connection Issues page

NOTE: Many broadband internet modems now come with routing capabilities built in. Please contact your internet service provider to determine if your internet modem has an integrated router. If it does, they should be able to assist you with the steps for setting up your home network.
Once you have completed the steps above, the game should report your NAT type as OPEN and should make use of the maximum bandwidth supported by your internet service provider for your account. To see what NAT type is detected by the game, go to the Multiplayer or Zombies Main Menu, select Options, and select System Info. In the System Info panel, there will be a category called “NAT TYPE”. If the game reports your NAT type as STRICT, you will have difficulties playing online and will need to adjust your router settings or replace it with a gaming console compatible router (here is a list of Xbox Live compatible routers, for example). If the game reports your NAT type as MODERATE, you may have difficulties connecting to some game hosts. An OPEN NAT type is the best setting for online gaming.Preserve the integrity of your network:Make sure that you are not using bandwidth-intensive applications from other devices on your home network while you are online gaming. If someone else in your household is streaming movies on another device, they will degrade the quality of your network connection by consuming a large amount of your available bandwidth. Torrent sharing software is another example of a bandwidth-intensive application. If you have torrent sharing active, that will also severely impact your network by consuming a large amount of available bandwidth. It is easy to forget about applications such as this because they often run in the background on your laptop or desktop computer. Be sure to manually disable sharing in these applications when you are online gaming.MATCHMAKING

Matchmaking is equally as important to the connection quality of your game as home networking. Matchmaking is impacted by all of the following:

  1. Region – If you live in a remote region, it will be more difficult to find hosted games that match your profile. The best option for those in extremely remote regions is to play during local peak hours in playlists with high player counts.
  2. Time of day – Since matchmaking works to find the game with the best connection quality, it will have a much easier time finding high quality connections when there are more players online in your area. As a general rule, peak usage occurs during the late afternoon and evening hours in each time zone.
  3. DLC ownership – DLC map packs divide matchmaking pools into groups of players who have DLC and players who don’t have DLC. The more map packs that are released, the more matchmaking pools there are. Nine months after the initial launch of the game, for example, the highest single population of players is that which owns all map packs.

For most players – i.e., those who live in regions with a high population of players and who play during peak local hours in popular playlists – matchmaking will find the best connection quality games available. For the smaller percentage of players who do not fall within this category, your network connection quality may benefit from adjusting some of your online gameplay patterns.

Additionally, the game provides the option to change your matchmaking search preferences to favor getting into better quality games (which may extend the time it takes to find a match) or getting into games faster (which may result in lower quality network connection with the host). In the “Find Match” playlist selection screen, press the button labeled “Search Preferences” and select your preference of either matchmaking speed or connection quality.”

Black Ops 2 Multiplayer Perks, Attachments & more revealed

After the recent release of a huge amount of Information regarding Black Ops 2 Multiplayer experience, more detailed information has surfaced via a truster source at pspking.de which details all the perks which will be available online and much more.

Take a look at what we should be expecing in Black Ops 2:

“To start off, this is all information gathered from a trusted source. Here it is.

To clarify what elite is, it is a side-pro perk you can choose when leveling up the base perk. These elite perks ONLY work if paired with another BASE perk.

-Perks- (Only new and modified!) (Perk slot not yet defined!)

1. Spy – Appear as a friend on the map. (Disadvantage is, you’re always spotted even without a UAV, and when shooting, you turn red on the map)

b. Pro – Detect enemy spies. They will still always be spotted on the radar.

c. Elite – If Pilot is active, your airship will be marked as an ally.

2. Escape Artist – When going prone, you feign death (You cannot shoot during)

b. Pro – When approaching death, the enemies crosshairs will turn to white, and your name will dissapear.

c. Elite – if Diver is active – You realistically fall into your feign death instead of diving.

3. Audiophile – Players with silenced weapons will show on your radar if they are shooting at you or close around you.

b. Pro – Footsteps are louder

c. Elite – If bladesman is active – kniving will show up on the radar

4. Defuser - Throw all equipment but cookable grenades up to 2x farther – a hollow circle will show up around your crosshairs, and the circle will fill in 3 seconds. When the circle is full, it will throw 2x farther, when it is empty, it will throw 1x as far.

b. Pro – Be able to take semtex off of players and throw them elsewhere, and be able to pick up any enemy equipment and use it as your own.

c. Elite – if quickdraw is active – the circle will fill in 1.5 seconds.

5. Juggernaut – Regenerate health faster while moving

b. Pro – Regenerate health faster while crouched

c. Elite – If scavenger is active – you are able to drop ammo packs for your team.

6. Diver – You can dive into cover (A.K.A. Dolphin Dive) – and while diving you can still shoot, however when you land it takes awhile to regain focus.

b. Pro – You crawl 2x faster

c. Elite – With Extreme conditioning active – You can sprint while crawling to crawl faster (3x) instead of getting up.

7. Pilot – Your flying killstreak’s kills will count towards your next killstreak.

b. Pro – Your controllable flying killstreaks will last until they are shot down.

c. Elite – With blind eye active – Your uncontrollable flying killstreaks will not show on the map.

8. Technician – Any land killstreak’s kills will count towards your next killstreak.

b. Pro – Your Advnaced UAVS will disable the enemies UAV

c. Elite – If defuser is active, your sentries cannot be taken down instantly.

9. Bladesman – You have 2 knives in each hand instead of just one in one hand. (This essentially makes knives kill twice as fast.)

b. Pro – You have a chance of dodging the incoming players knife.

c. Elite – If assasin is active – kniving will be completely silent and not show on the killfeed, unless countered by audiophile elite.

10. Conciousness – While standing, you are just as accurate as when you are prone

b. Pro – Your bullets cause more flinching.

c. Elite – If marksman is active – shooting your enemy will mark him on the mini map.

11. Focus – Be able to shoot while sprinting, even at the deduction of accuracy.

b. Pro – Be able to shoot while jumping, even at the deduction of accuracy.

c. Elite – If stalker is active – when jumping, equipment does less damage to you.

12. Deep Impact – Your bullets shoot through hard surfaces.

b. Pro – Your bullets gain 50% damage with each person they go through.

c. Elite – if steady aim is active – when hip-firing, your bullets have 10% more damage with each person they go through.

–Knife Melee Slot–

1. Default Knife – takes 2 swipes to kill, you need to put it away, and take it back out like usual.

2. Tactical knife – takes 4 swipes to kill, as long as you are pushing the melee button however, it will keep knifing

3. Tactical hammer – takes longer to get out, takes 4 swipes to kill, you need to put it away and take it back out like usual, but against riot shields and machines it takes only 1 swipe to destroy.

4. Throwing knifes – Start with 4, fast to get out, fairly accurate, but takes 2 to kill and is ranged

5. Tomahawks – Start with 2, slow to get out, fairly innacurate, and takes 1 to kill and is ranged

6. Ballistic knife – [Disallows use of equipment] – A tactical knife in one hand, while a ballistic knife is in the other. You start with 2 ballistic knives, and they kill in 1 shot. These knives take a moderate time to get out. (With Bladesman on, you start with 3 ballistic knives and one ballistic knife in each hand.)

A huge amount of information there, abosorb it all if you can. Some of the ones we particularly interested in are the following:

  • “Your controllable flying killstreaks will last until they are shot down.” This is going to make anti-air weapons a necessity for all teams in the game otherwise your team will just get dominated completely. If you don’t have a team who’s willing to shoot it down then you are pretty much done for!
  • “You realistically fall into your feign death instead of diving.” Get ready to start spraying all those corpses people! The Spy’s Dead Ringer from Team Fortress 2 comes to mind here! It will be an interesting asset to the game!
  • “Be able to shoot while sprinting, even at the deduction of accuracy.”. This one sounds like great fun, charging at the enemies with an LMG. The phrase “Spray & Pray” will be more than appropriate.
  • Knifing enemies will no longer be instant death! The smallest number of hits the enemy must take before dying will be two, this is gonna result in some nail biting close quarter combat situations!
