No awards for Modern Warfare 3 at Game BAFTAS – Is this the beginning of the end for Call of Duty?

The British BAFTA video game awards took place yesterday, a highly prestigious award ceremony celebrating the achievements of 2011 video games all over the world.

The BAFTA’s for video games have been running since 2003 and the Call of Duty franchise to date has been awarded 7 awards, ranging back to the first ever Call of Duty. The previous three years, Call of Duty has taken home awards for the original Modern Warfare up until last years Black Ops.

Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops both taking home the GAME game of the year award. This year though, things have changed. Could this be the beginning of the end for the Call of Duty franchise?

About the BAFTA’s:

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is an independent charity that supports, develops and promotes the art forms of the moving image by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public.

About the judging process:

“Games were entered by both developers and publishers into all the categories listed in this release and were initially voted on by BAFTA’s video games members and a carefully selected list of industry experts via a secure website.

The titles garnering the most votes went through to specialist juries who receive the games prior to making their nominations.

Each juror signs confidentiality papers and casts their votes on paper. The results in each category are not known until the envelope is opened on the night.

Modern Warfare 3 sales figures speak for themselves though. Modern Warfare 3 is estimated to have sold around 26.3 Million copies across the Xbox, PS3 and PC platforms. Battlefield 3 sold less than half of that, 12.47 million copies across the same 3 platforms. (Source: VGChartz)

It’s clear to say that sales number does not reflect quality. Modern Warfare 3 has caused a fair amount of discomfort and annoyance amongst its huge community ever since it was released though…

Many users complained that Modern Warfare 3 was too similar to the previous MW2 released back in 2010 along with initial bug problems…

PC and PlayStation 3 users are pretty ticked off about the whole DLC system still as they are getting it a month behind the Xbox 360, while the Wii users are even more upset since no DLC is being released for their platform at all.

Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 are both amazing games but I think it is fair to say that Modern Warfare 3 lacked the innovation and new content that was featured in Battlefield 3. In my opinion the campaign story in Modern Warfare 3 was weak in comparison to the previous Black Ops one which was one of the best campaign stories in a Call of Duty game ever.

The Modern Warfare 3 franchise has been growing ever since it was first released. If you check out the graph above you can see clearly that Call of Duty currently is bigger than ever. Even with the numbers, users are unhappy, confusion has arisen over the new DLC model with the addition of the ELITE service which is splitting up the community between Elite-Premium members and regular members.

What will the year hold for the next addition to the Call of Duty franchise? It is pretty certain the ELITE service isn’t going anywhere any time soon but more concern is towards whether the deal between Microsoft and Activision will end this year and finally the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 can be on equal playing fields (Assuming an ELITE service is brought to the PC!).

Overall, as it stands it has been a disappointing time for Modern Warfare 3 at the BAFTA’s, losing out to it’s biggest competitor: Battlefield 3 in 3 different awards.

Only time will tell but with negative reviews plaguing Modern Warfare 3, with a user score on Metacritic.com of just 2.2 on the PC, it is clear the community is unhappy and that needs fixing. Hopefully the rumoured Black Ops 2 scheduled for release in November will rejuvenate the Call of Duty franchise and add a breath of fresh air into the series. We shall just have to wait and see though, it will be a tough achievement to match or improve upon Modern Warfare 3′s sales figures.
