Network / Connection issues with Modern Warfare 3?


For those of you having problems with your network connection with Modern Warfare 3 or can’t connect to their servers, there are some steps here that you could try:

  1. Check to see if the Call of Duty servers are down here: http://www.callofduty.com/mw3/status If they are down then it is a problem on their end of things, not yours and everyone will be in the same position. All you can do is wait till they are back online. Chances are they will be down for maintenance.
  2. Restart your router and console to refresh everything and start a brand new connection.
  3. Make sure your Routers Firmware is updated, read the instruction manual for your router for a guide of how to do this. A simple firmware update can make a huge difference.
  4. Security of Firewall software on your router could cause network problems, disable this to see if it helps your connection. If you are using a PC make sure you have adequate software firewall protection installed.
  5. If you are still having problems you can try port forwarding which is a little more advanced. This interacts directly with your router to allow connections on the specific ports Modern Warfare 3 uses. You can learn how to forward ports here. The router / firewall ports corresonding to your platform are below:

If you try all the 4 steps above you should be getting a perfect connection, if not then the likely cause of the problem is either on Activision’s servers end or a problem on your ISP’s end. You can contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or Activision directly to get extra help in fixing your network problems.

Update 13/11/2011:

A quote from Activision: “Since Tuesday’s launch, Modern Warfare 3′s multiplayer has been working great. In fact, the amount of players online is even higher than what it was this time last year for Black Ops. Have fun — we hope you continue to enjoy MW3 to the fullest.

However, on Call of Duty Elite, we are having trouble scaling the service to meet demand. We’re aware that many of you are currently experiencing problems with the Call of Duty Elite service. You’re frustrated, we know it, and we know we need to fix it. Our teams have been working non-stop to identify issues and resolve them as quickly as possible. Again, these issues have no impact on the performance of the game. If you have questions about the state of the Call of Duty Elite service, please go to http://www.callofduty.com/elitestatus.

Please note that we are experiencing heavier than normal volume. As a result, there may be a delay in receiving a response. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

So if the problems are on their end of things then theres nothing we can do unfortunatelyexcept wait for them to fix the problem and upgrade their servers to deal with the enormous volume of players.


Extra Tip for PS3 users:

“Try deleting the PS3 browser cache and the browser’s cookies.

Do the following to delete the PS3 browser cache & cookies:

  • In the Playstation XMB select “Network“.
  • Scroll down and select “Internet Browser” and Press X.
  • Press the triangle button.
  • Highlight “Tools” and press Right on the analog stick or diagonal pad.
  • Scroll down and highlight “Delete Cache”.
  • Press X and select Yes.
  • Then highlight “Delete Cookies”.
  • Press X and select Yes.

Extra tip for Xbox-360 users:

“Run the Xbox Network Self Test to see how strong your NAT is currently set to. Turn on your Xbox 360 without a disc inside and go to “My Xbox”, select “System Settings”-> “Network Settings” then choose “Test Xbox Live Connection” and let the test run. Once the test is completed you will be notified if there is an issue with your connection. If you select “More Info” you will be given information about your NAT type and some steps to resolve any issues with your connection.”

Extra tip for PC users:

  • Navigate to the following path on your PC (or where you have the Modern Warfare 3 files located): C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam and delete the file named “ClientRegistry.blob” and restart steam.
  • Ensure you have the “Dedicated server” option enabled in your Modern Warfare 3 settings.
  • Update your routers firmware as stated above already, as this can be a factor that a lot of people overlook but updating it could fix all your problems.
