New “Face Off” mode in Modern Warfare 3: What is it?

Face Off has small maps, custom created to have sight lines and layouts to keep you the action quickly. Engagements occur quickly and regularly so you don’t spend a huge amount of time running around the map searching for the enemy.

Face Off is a great way to see who the best player is amongst your friends in maps that are small enough to make it fun and even.

There will be three playlists for Face Off, either a 1v1 playlist, a 2v2 playlist & a 3v3 playlist. (Also available in Split Screen!). The base of each Face Off match will be either Team Deathmatch or Kill Confirmed.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Modern Warfare 3 executive producer Mark Rubin shed some light on why Face Off will be introduced. He explained, “Normally in itself one-on-one isn’t particularly creatively innovative, but what we’ve done is design the maps deliberately for this style of play. In normal map development you have large maps that have long sight lines, then when you make smaller maps you shorten the sight line – the engagement distance becomes smaller when the map becomes smaller.”

“But with these Face-Off maps, because it’s not six-on-six, we’ve made the sight lines longer for the size of the map that it is. You actually end up engaging quicker and having a more exciting experience on the map. You still get a really new feel and experience out of the gameplay; not just the heavy, frantic experience you would get out of a normal multiplayer match. You get more tension build-up on these smaller maps,” he concluded.

The great thing about “Face Off” is that it is free for ALL Modern Warfare 3 players, you don’t need a premium ELITE Subscription or to purchase the map pack to play it. Face Off will come with two standard maps which will be available to all players. Two additional maps however are available through (Lookout & Getaway) purchasing the map pack or a premium ELITE Subscription.

Face Off Map: Aground (Free to all MW3 Players): (Available to all MW3 members): Head to Scotland’s Orkney Islands for the latest “Face Off” map, where treacherous cliff faces, networks of caves and the rusted and ruined remains of a grounded transport ship provide for constant combat.

Face Off Map: Erosion (Free to all MW3 Players): (Available to all MW3 members): Make your way through Mediterranean ruins and ancient aqueducts, using leftover Roman masonry for thousand-year-old cover in this new “Face Off” map. An epic visual experiance, brilliant architecture which is built around a 2v2 gameplay style. This map has three main routes, two down the side and one down the middle.

ELITE Content Drop 12: (Two Face Off maps for ELITE members, Lookout & Getaway):

Lookout: (Extra Face Off map only available to Content Collection 2 owners or ELITE Premium members): Carved into a combat-weary mountainside, this new “Face Off” map pits you against your opposition in a forward observation base littered in chokepoints and tight corridors. Set in the hills of Afgahnistan.

Getaway: (Extra Face Off map only available to Content Collection 2 owners or ELITE Premium members): The first “Face Off” map in Modern Warfare® franchise history, what once was a tropical beach getaway boasting exotic aquariums and oversized pools is now a haven for ruthless run-and-gun violence. Set in an amazing house on the beaches of Brazil, a brilliant Face Off map.
